VW Golf Check Engine Light on and no Gas Gauge Reading…?

Ok, I just bought a ‘99 VW GOlf GL. When I bought it, the gas gauge wasn’t giving any reading – I knew that and bought it anyway although I don’t know what the problem is. Actually, when i start the car it moves a little, but other than that the reading stays on empty. Also (and I don’t know if this is involved) the check engine light came on recently so I got the code and it says that there is a large EVAP leak. I know it’s not the gas cap, but I haven’t had a chance to take it in yet. Can anyone tell me if these things may be related and or what the possibilities may be? Thanks so much, this is my first VW and I am kinda lost here.

EVAP leak could be a bad gas cap.
The two problems you mention are not related.
The gas gage has a float inside the fuel tank that registers the level of gas in the tank.
It may be faulty, or a wire may have become disconnected to it. Or, it could be the gage it’s self. It’s hard to say without testing it.

Either way. Seek help from a trusted local mechanic.
